Finding shapes.
Looking up at the sky
Paul Strand
Focus: The whole subject is in focus but the shadow gets softer in the lower half of the photo that appears to be the edge of the subject.
Light: The light in this image creates a large difference in the contrast, There is bright sunshine and Dark shadows making the sun light seem brighter. There is a giant triangle of light accompanied by lines of light. There is also dark shadows creating a contrast in shapes and colours.
Line & Shape: There are a number of strong lines, mostly straight although these are complemented by the sweeping curve of the main object. Which follows the edges of the photo. All the lines have geometric and straight shapes.
Space: The space in the image appears quite shallow, tightly locked in by the cropping. We don't see the whole subject to emphasise the shapes.
Repetition : There is strong repetition of lines of light occurring down the sides of the photo coming from the slats of a man made object creating the repetitive shapes. The composition in this photo emphasises the patterns and makes the lines sharper.
Texture: There is not much texture to this photo due to it being a flat image, But on the table like surface there is a concrete like texture appearing in the dark shadows.
Value & Tone: There is a large tone difference in this image as the light and the shadows are 2 different tones creating a large contrast and different values.

My Attempt

The silhouettes that are created by these highly contrasted photographs show the industrial areas of the urban environment. Keld Helmer Peterson focused on the composition with lines and shapes overlapping to make the bold images.

Shapes ,Patterns & repetition -Photo-shoot 3
Selected photos from the photoshoot
. These are my top 12 photos from this shoot. In this shoot I was looking for shapes, patterns & repetition inspired by Keld Helmer Peterson , Michael Wolf and Maholy Nagy. I was particularly inspired by Michael wolfs skyscraper repitition photos. I tried this by taking pictures of repeated windows. Finally I was inspired by Keld Helmer Peterson who takes pictures of structures from different angles to get abstract shapes and contrasts in colours. I tried taking pictures of structures from low angles to make the structures look abstract and use the sky to create a contrast in colours.

Refining my ideas
Selecting the best and experimenting with editing.
For this image I took a few steps to edit it
Step 1: I cropped the image to adjusted the composition so it looks more like a Michael wolf inspired photo. Step 2: I put the image into black and white to make it look more like a Keld Helmer Peterson. Step 3 : I adjusted the levels to create a higher contrast between the blacks and whites. Step 4: I created a yellow, red green gradient and then changed the opacity and the blend option to overlay. Step 5: I duplicated the coloured layer then rotated some of the layers to get the abstract look. |
For this image I took a few steps to edit them.
Step 1 : I rotated the image so it was the right way up. step 2: I put the image in black and white to adjust the contrast so it looks more like a Keld Helmer Peterson picture. step 3: I duplicated the layer and rotated it so its upside down, to get an abstract look. step 4: I then adjusted the opacity and blend option so it looks more like a shadow. step 5: I then added the red , yellow and green layer and adjusted the opacity and blend options to keep the colour theme. |
For this image I took a few steps to edit it.
step 1: I cropped the image because there were some things in the image I didn't want. Step 2: I put the image in black and white and adjusted the levels so the electrical tower stands out more so it looks like a keld Helmer Peterson image. Step 3: Finally I added the red , yellow and green gradient to follow the theme. |
